2007 Activities again created an opportunity for us to provide support for our selected charities. Our sincere thanks goes to Alex White and Monika Ebly for the benefit that they put together in Chicago this past Spring. Funds were raised in Chris' honor and fun and memories of Chris were shared by all.
The "Tee for 2" golf event was a great success again this year and we want to thank everyone that made this event a success and contributed to our foundation and The Children's Tumor Foundation.
Watch this area for future events!

Update
We are pleased to announce that we have collected more than $60,000 since the creation of the CHRISTOPHER SAATHOFF FOUNDATION. We have now made our first choices regarding donations from the foundation.... Made possible by all of those who contributed - Thank you!
First of all we set up a scholarship fund at the Old Town School of Folk Music in the amount of $25,000 in Chris's name. The scholarship will provide access to music lessons for young musicians in Chicago that would normally not be able to afford such lessons. Since 1957, The Old Town School has taught and celebrated music and cultural expressions rooted in the traditions of diverse American and global communities. We hope to grow this scholarship fund and to work with the school to provide a memorial to Chris. Donations can be made in the future directly to this scholarship fund......
We also made contributions in the amount of $1000 to each of the following charitable organizations from Chris's foundation:
AAIM - (Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists) Based in Chicago AAIM's mission is to prevent deaths and injuries caused by intoxicated motorists in Illinois and to help victims and their families. They were our advocates during the court proceedings against the person that killed Chris. They continue the fight against what is a growing disease in our country.......
MusiCares - Established in 1989 by The Recording Academy, MusiCares has been helping music people across the country cope with personal, medical and financial hardships. We designated our $1000 donation to go to the aid of musicians affected by hurricane Katrina.
Heifer International - One of the more intriguing organizations that we have found and one we are sure Chris would have loved to support. Their mission is to end world hunger while caring for the earth. Our $1000 contribution was designated to provide a "Milk Menagerie" which includes providing four milk producing animals (a cow, two goats and a water buffalo) to a family or community in an impoverished area wherever Heifer has an established working relationship. It is about helping others to help themselves....
Again - thanks for your contributions and best wishes for a wonderful holiday season!

Family Statement
In regards to sentencing or punishment of the person that took Chris's life, we feel there is no adequate punishment. This careless and reckless act destroyed a beautiful, young life. The defendant chose to turn his vehicle into a weapon by drinking and driving when he should not. This crime should be punished to the maximum and punished in the same manner as any crime where one person takes the life of another. We would expect remorse for the actions from the defendant, but don't truly anticipate there will be any. We would expect that our judicial systems will start recognizing that driving under the influence and killing someone is as severe as taking someone's life in any other manner and should be punished accordingly.
Christopher Saathoff is and always will be loved by his family and friends. We miss him and cherish our memories of him. Nothing the court can do will bring him back.

Trial Update
We want everyone to be aware that the case against the defendant in Chris's case is progressing. The next court date is slated for August 16,2005 in courtroom 606 (Judge Moran). It appears a plea and sentence could be issued on this date. We are told that the proceeding will not take very long and Marlene, Jared nor I will be traveling back for the session. If you want to attend I suggest calling the Cook County Courthouse @ 2650 S. California to verify the time that the proceeding will take place. Thanks for all of your support! (Case number is 04 CR-6546)

Show Update
On February 19, 2005, the memory of Christopher Saathoff (lovingly referred to as Chris Playboy) was honored by four bands and over three hundred people at a benefit concert at the Subterranean Club in Chicago, Illinois. Derron Swan, the booking agent of Subterranean, generously donated full access to the venue for the night, and provided working staff for the event. Chicago bands The Krunchies, Vee Dee, Hot Machines, and Detroit's The Clone Defects all donated their talents and services for the night, inspiring the crowd to dance and celebrate Chris' impeccable taste in rock'n'roll music. Both the Hot Machines and Clone Defects reunited solely for the 19th after year-long hiatuses to support the Foundation. Coordinated by Alexandra White and Monika Ebly, the concert marked a fantastic success for the Foundation, as it simultaneously rose awareness of the Foundation, and garnered financial support.
The Krunchies and Vee Dee can be heard at criminaliq.com, the Hot Machines can be found at missilex.com, and the Clone Defects can be heard at intheredrecords.com. Subterranean nightclub can be accessed at subt.net.

To Chris
The Saathoff Family has asked me to post a letter that I wrote to Chris last evening on my website.
Chris,
It's been exactly one year since I received one of the worst phone calls of my entire life. When I heard that you were gone, I just kind of sat in a stunned silence for a while. I didn't know what to think, or what to do. To be honest, I still get that way on occasion. It's as if the reality of the entire situation has still not sunk in yet. Your absence has left a void in so many lives here in Chicago, and it is felt every day.
I miss our daily conversations on IM. When the opportunity came up to leave my old job, you were the only one who actually took my resume and got the ball rolling to get me out of that crappy job. I'm sure you were busy as hell, but you'd always take the time to listen to me rant. I never got to thank you for that, and I regret that every day I walk into liquidPrint. For all the talks we had about starting our own company, I sure wish I had the opportunity to work with you.
I don't know why, but when I'm at shows, I constantly catch myself thinking that I see you standing there. It takes a few glances over to convince myself that it couldn't be you. I remember your screams and hollers from the back of the Empty Bottle when rollo would play there, and lookin' up to see your drunk-ass was absolutely hilarious. Speaking of shows, when Matt and I went to see Helmet last November, I remember Matt telling me that you would have loved it. I'd have to agree.
I still find it hard to listen to the Chinup Chinup stuff. I remember back when the first EP came out and I bought a copy from you. You were so stoked when you handed it over to me, and when I first listened to it, I knew why. I'd play that for people every chance I got, proudly declaring that I was friends with that killer bass player. I'd include those songs on mixes I'd make for people, and I hope they got as much out of it as I did. You'd be so proud to know how great the full length turned out. I just wish that I could go to another Chinup show and see you up there rockin' out. Fuck man, this just isn't fair.
I'm most saddened by the fact that we never got to know each other better than we did. I see how people who were super tight with you have been affected, and that hurts me just as much to see that. I still have a hard time accepting that anything good came out of this, but I do find myself trying to be a better friend to those around me.
Chris, I'm not entirely sure why I'm writing this to you. Perhaps somehow, some way, you do. I've never lost a friend before, and I know that I never want it to happen again. I just wanted to say that you are sorely missed around here, and things just aren't the same without you.
Until we meet again,
-Pete |
